The U.S. State Department is now the latest agency in the Trump administration to bring the federal government against violent Antifa chapters. On Thursday, the State Department designated four Antifa groups in Europe as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).

Myself and other participants at the White House roundtable on Antifa in October made the suggestion for the label to President Donald Trump since he already designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. He told Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who walked in to make his own news with regard to the Israel-Hamas war, to look into it.

I asked the White House for an update about the designation for Antifa’s foreign cells earlier this month. At the time, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she had no updates but the State Department was working on it.

In a statement to MostlyPeaceful.media, State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said:

“The anarchists, Marxists, and violent extremists of Antifa have waged a terror campaign in the United States and across the Western world for decades, carrying out bombings, beatings, shootings, and riots in service of their extreme agenda. The State Department is committed to identifying and dismantling these terror networks that conspire to ruthlessly suppress the will of the people and violently undermine the very foundations of the United States and Western Civilization.”

The four Antifa groups to be first labeled as a FTO are:

  • Antifa Ost, based in Germany

  • The International Revolutionary Front, also known as the Informal Anarchist Federation, based in Italy

  • Armed Proletarian Justice, based in Greece

  • Revolutionary Class Self Defense, based in Greece

Each of the groups are responsible for carrying out multiple attacks in Europe, according to the State Department. Antifa Ost was labeled as a terrorist organization by Hungary in September 2025 after the group’s militants assaulted nine people with hammers, batons, and pepper spray in Budapest, Hungary in 2023.

Two militants affiliated with the International Revolutionary Front shot and wounded a nuclear engineering executive in 2012.

Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), who has been working on the issue of Antifa’s activities, told MostlyPeaceful.media:

“I’m grateful to Secretary Rubio and the Trump Administration for working with me on this critical issue – holding these radical groups who enable, fund, and support political violence in the United States and across the world accountable. Each of these groups are violent cells in this transnational operation. Designating them as FTO’s is an important step to dismantling this subversive network of far-left extremism.”

The new label is on the heels of Antifa and other far-left radicals attacking Turning Point USA’s final campus tour stop at the University of California, Berkeley.

So what does it mean now that these four groups are considered FTOs?
